Per David Helmer, Executive Director Administration Morris County Park Commission: A decision was made to close the facilities due to the significant increase in visitation that began to impact the gardens, staff and park patrons. The Park Commission is acutely aware of the importance of parks and open spaces during the times that we are now experiencing. Arboreta are a collection of plants and trees that must be protected so as to provide long-term enjoyment to our park patrons. Although Willowwood Arboretum and the Gardens of Bamboo Brook are comprised of large meadow spaces and trails the primary significance of the properties are the ‘Gardens’ and we cannot secure one from the other.

We quickly identified that visitors were not adhering to the advice on social distancing and when they did they were moving into the delicate gardens spaces and impacting plant material. This along with the need to distance staff from each other and the public became a primary consideration for the Commission to close the horticultural facilities along with the historic sites. The general purpose parks and trails are able to take the impact of increased use and when outlying areas are impacted have a better chance of responding back with little maintenance.

The Commission appreciates your concern and passion for Willowwood Arboretum but we have the responsibility of being the best stewards of the property that we can be and to ensure the long-term viability of the gardens.
