Rain ending, Cherries starting at Willowwood!

4/15/14 Our second bloom report!

The heat this weekend finally pushed along some blooming.

The Cherries in the Rosarie are starting to bloom. The big ,old Cherry in the Lilac collection and the one behind the Conservatory are breaking bud.

The Cornus mas by the entrance and by the Rockery are full of yellow flowers.

The Daffodils in the fields and the Winter Garden are in bloom.

The Magnolia stellata (Star magnolias) are in bloom throughout the Arboretum.

The Pansies are in full flower in the Propagation house. We’ll start planting them outside on the 21st.

The Rockery is full of color-Squill, Hellebore’s ,Primroses ,Double Bloodroot, Daphne, Pieris and White Forsythia.

There is a large fragrant Viburnum farreri in bloom in the Lilac collection along with the Forsythia.

There is Jeffersonia blooming on the left side of the Chive walk .

There is more Bloodroot blooming by the Wisteria arbor next to the Shingle barn, see if you can find it! Remember it opens up in full sun and closes at night.

SPRING!!! 1st Bloom Report from Willowwood

The weather this weekend and next week looks like we might have a bit of Spring. Good time to take a little stroll and breathe.

Here is the bloom report as of yesterday!

The daffodils by the parking lot are starting to show color.

In the rockery the Scilla siberica (Scilla) , Chionodoxa lucilea (Glory of the Snow), Hellebores and Leucojum vernum ‘Spring Snowflake’ are in bloom.

In Pans’ garden there is a Viburnum farreri located in the front left corner that is ready to bloom, it’s very fragrant!

The Hammamelis (Witch Hazels) across from the Tubbs’ house and in the Winter Garden are also very fragrant right now.

There is a riot of yellow Winter Aconite in bloom in the Cottage garden .

There are crocus in bloom along the left side of the drive as you enter , further down by the bend in the road on both sides, by the parking lot and up the right side of the private drive.

There are pansies in bloom in the propagation house.

The cherries have still not broken bud yet. Will let you know as soon as they begin!

2013 Photo Contest Winners

The 2013 contest featured Willowwood’s Magnolias.

Generally in bloom March into April, the top twelve photos of Magnolias were displayed at WW on Mother’s Day and at the Lilac Party, May 19, 2013. After voting, the winning photos were featured in this website’s Photo Section. First Place prize winner is Elise Ange. Navjot Singh won 2nd Place, Peggy Wagemann, 3rd Place and David Mills, 4th Place.
